This is an expanded rerelease of The Zero to One Sessions, an I.F.F. album originally released by Nice+Smooth Records in 2005 under the name Mossyrock. Why Mossyrock? Well... During the summer of 2004, I went into a studio in Kitchener, Ontario armed with a dozen demos and spent 10 wonderfully grueling days assembling, dismantling, recreating, dissecting and re-recording what became this album. Somewhere between the making of the record (summer) and the mixing/mastering of it (autumn), things fell apart with the original touring incarnation of I.F.F. and I thought it was time to move on under another name. Long story slightly less long, that decision didn't age well.

I recently dug through all the remixes and demos and decided that the album's 15-year anniversary seemed like a good time to release an expanded version, while also reclaiming it as what it was initially intended to be: an I.F.F. record.

This expanded edition features the original album + a collection of remixes of its songs + the Juniper Flats demos, where this particular chapter of I.F.F. began.

Released May 1st 2020.

Ottawa
Levitate

Feather Forward

I recorded a live set from my home studio (in a small Quebec village near Montreal) for WKDU 91.7FM in Philadelphia. It all came together after my first live set back in the big beautiful world at (the now defunct) Halcyon Records in Brooklyn. My big comeback consisted of two live sets before the dreaded pandemic hit and shut that shit down.

Despite WKDU saying it was recorded at Halcyon - this live set is completely unique to their Soundcloud page and has a different setlist arrangement.

Broadcast on May 29th 2019.

The Amish Funk EP

Tracklisting:
Amish Funk [Taperecorder Remix]
Amish Funk [Someone Else Remix]
Theme [Jeff Samuel Remix]

This was set to be released on vinyl by Robbaudio back in 2006. Even making it as far as the test pressing phase. Things were changing quickly in that world though. Final Scratch, laptop DJing and just a general decline in the global sales of vinyl resulted in Robb (from Robbaudio) abandoning this and a few other releases and running off with all the money. Yep, I was never paid for the Green Couch EP because he told me he was going to put it towards the next release and then he fled. If you are reading this Robb: Fucking pay me bruv! Anyway, it ended up being released digitally by Galactique a few years later.

The abandoned Robbaudio release date was October 2006.
Later released by Galactique on December 15th 2008.

Wintergalactic Tour 2003/2004

This was another intense but lovely tour. Thee IFF were no strangers to 2 weeks here and 3 weeks there. But after those few summer months on the road there was an itch that needed to be scratched. This tour involved some planes but mostly a blue Chrysler minivan. The bright idea was after some shows in the cold north country they would tour the south where it would be much warmer. Well, a winter ice storm had a different plan in mind for the fellas.

For the Canadian shows the lineup consisted of Marc Francis Hug, Tim Bones and Cookie Costa (on bass and trumpet). They spent a couple of nights rehearsing in an old cold garage that belonged to Tim's family before playing a rowdy show at the Zero To One Galleries in Kitchener/Waterloo. Folowed by a NYE show in Toronto.

The rest of the tour consisted of Marc Francis Hug and original touring lineup memeber and long time engineer mastermixer Jeffro Richards.

That was until they played an excellent show with the amazing psych-punk band Dead Meadow at the Lamplighter in Knoxville Tennessee. They made some friends with a local guy named Samuel who's band was also on the bill and pretty much said "fuck it", quit his job and came along playing guitar for the rest of the tour. So did a gal named Beatrice. Jeffro and Bea had a torrid little affair and, sadly, years later we heard she was struck by lightning and killed while hiking in North Carolina. Life is fucking crazy, innit?

The first leg of the tour took them up the California coast; across the mountains and down to Las Vegas. They actually played a casino (the Flamingo) where they played for 30 or 40 seconds before being cutoff. There was a rule about no swearing and no vulgarities or something and as they looked out at all these aging rock & roll dudes who had cut their hair to a respectable length and traded in their black leather jackets for brown below the buttock ones a feeling of knowing they were 100% in the wrong venue washed over them. They had also drank 40's of Steel Reserve malt liquor in a gas station parking lot so this also might have helped the "great idea" of playing the drum machine at 180bpm while screaming "fuck" into the microphone and having their Roland digital delay/effects processor echo it all over the beautiful "hip" venue within the Flamingo. The sound man turned them off after abiut 30 seconds. Marc yelled fuck a few more times to nobody in particular. And then they packed up their gear in total silence and were escorted out by security who warned them to never come back because they were banned for life.

From there they played in Prescott Arizona and met with their old Philly friend Monkey. He had moved out west to reconnect with his tribe and was working as a sheppard. He took them into Sedona canyons and invited them to take part in a Hopi ceremony. They stayed with him for a few glorious days before heading out to the next leg of the tour: Amarillo, Memphis, Knoxville, Asheville and Greensboro.

The weather had been snowy and cold the whole time but the ice storm part of the storm hit once they'd left the comfort of their pals home in Greensboro. From New Orleans thru Hattiesburg, Baton Rouge, Nashville (Murfreesboro), Mobile, Atlanta, Charleston, Houston, El Paso and almost all the way back to San Diego (homebase) - they battled icy interstates, freezing rain, and power outtages. Shit was kind of ridiculous to be honest.

Russell Crowe: 1 Moby: 0

Tracklisting:
A: Our Song
B: How Ya Like Them Apples?
---
Unlisted bonus song:
B: Poor Me

This single began it's life after Their Kiss... but before the Happy Ending Massage. It was supposed to be a split single with a Philly band we loved called Sola. By this time we were living in the middle of nowhere near a town called Homeland in the California desert. Just days before the music for the single was being sent off to be pressed onto vinyl the guy from Sola who ran everything, Eric Wareheim, let me know the band had broken up because he got a gig in Hollywood working on something for TV called the Tim & Eric show.

Both songs were written and produced by Marc Francis. Guitar by Mike Butler.

Released December 15th 2003.

"HELP is a real nice peek into the bugged out, vibey life of tbtmo & friends circa 2003. This compilation was originally released in 2003 as a low-run (limited) screen-printed digipak cdr in an effort to promote releases from our label & related stuff. All tracks originally appeared on a different separate release but were combined here to create an interesting set of chill electronic, experimental, & indie pop."

Released July 15th 2003.

The Happy Ending Massage

Tracklisting:
Our Song
It Was She (Mind Control)
Broke Heart
A Rainy Day On Mt Vernon St
It Was She (Crossover Potential)
F-Man Tangent
It Just Doesn't Matter
Thelma Baby
It Was She (Cheetos Time)
How Ya Like Them Apples?

The Happy Ending Massage originally began it's life as a CDR of slower songs that didn't quite fit the direction that Their Kiss... had gone. It was passed around at various shows and festivals and soon became a favourite to some fans. It became clear that it was some sort of companion piece to the previous album. A song or two were cut while a song or two were added, artwork was made and an album called The Happy Ending Massage came together and was released (within six months of Their Kiss...)

Cut to almost 20 years later some of the shittier sounding (quality wise) songs were removed, the Russel Crowe:1 - Moby:0 single was added and a much better, streamlined version of the album came out. I think there were too many cooks in the kitchen when the original version of this album was being put together.

Originally released June 1st 2003 by Galactique Recordings. This remastered, expanded and contracted, semi-deluxe, special edition was released July 21st 2022 by Beau Bonhomme Records.

Summer Tour 2003 [Video Evidence]

Summer Tour 2003

The summer of 2003 found the I.F.F. crossing two countries playing live at festivals, nightclubs, bars, honky-tonks, pubs and juke joints. From the U.S. west coast thru the south up the east coast and into Canada all the while travelling in an old brown Chevy van. It was a cozy and, at times, sweltering affair with 3 to 4 boys and all their gear packed into the shag rug and wood panelled interior of their air conditionerless, 8 cylinder beast. The van was lovingly nicknamed 'Monkey Shit' after a line from the song "Putnam County" by Tom Waits ("and you climb into the helm of a 1958 monkey shit brown Buick Super and you're on your way home").

The fellas probably could have just flown from events to festivals to club to cities and had a much more relaxing time but they all felt like they needed to see and play in the small places in between. Make new connections and meet new friends and maybe even a few fans while seeing some of the weird and magical places in North America they'd never been exposed to.

It was an interesting tour financially. There were festivals, renegade parties and club events that paid well but there were many nights of tiny venues in between the long drives that yielded rowdy adventures (and some surly hangovers) but paid very little towards the thirsty gas guzzling Monkey Shit. I guess sleeping in the van or at friends (new and old) helped offset some of that cost....

The tour ended up being a one way event. The hired gun bass player (Mike) lived in Niagara-On-The-Lake (near Toronto); Andy was living in Brooklyn at the time so only joined us for the all glory no guts part of the tour; and Ben had decided he didn't like living in the California desert anymore. So Marc did the wonderfully quiet drive back to Homeland California all by his lonesome self.
